Starting Blocks with Sandra Thibodeaux
Writing something for the NT Literary Awards? Thinking of writing that novel at last? Always dabbled in poetry but haven’t been quite sure how to develop your craft?
This 4-week course will cover the basic skills, tools and approaches to writing in the creative genres.
Week 1: Voice
Through writing exercises, we will uncover your voice and explore your strengths as a writer. We will also touch upon theme and premise.
Week 2: Character/Dialogue
Through models and exercises we will explore: characters and their needs; the character arc; relationships between characters; and effective dialogue.
Week 3: Plot/Structure
Through models and exercises we will learn how to create a character-driven plot that engages tension and resolution to provide a satisfying narrative for an audience.
Week 4: Description/Use of Senses
This class will actively draw upon your senses and imagination as we explore approaches to description.
Sandra Thibodeaux is a playwright and poet. She has written over a dozen plays that have been staged as part of festivals and broadcast on Radio National. Her latest plays include The Lion Tamer (winner of the 2012 Darwin Festival Script Award) and Mr Takahashi (and other falling secrets) (short-listed for the Patrick White Playwright’s Award). Sandra has published four books of poetry, the latest of these being DIRTY H2O (Mulla Mulla Press). In 2011, Sandra was Australian Poetry’s Poet-in-Residence.
