New board members
The NT Writers’ Centre AGM was held on May 29, 2017 and the NTWC 2016 Annual Report was presented and accepted, along with the financial audit. As per the constitution, all board positions were vacated and a new board was re-elected.
Fortunately, most of the previous board members were nominated again, so the NTWC will retain their wisdom and experience. Long-time board member Fred van’t Sand was able to re-join the board after taking a year off, and the NTWC welcomed three brand new board members: Christian Bok, David Ketley and Carolyn Mison-Smith. The NTWC board for the next 12 months is:
President:Dr Martin Jarvis OAM (Darwin)
Professor Martin Jarvis OAM has a great deal of experience as a board member of funded arts organisations, both in Australia and the UK, as well as much experience Chairing. He is a published author of two books, and many journal articles, published in the Australia, the UK and USA.
Vice-president:Dr Adelle Sefton-Rowston (Darwin)
Adelle has a PhD in literature and lectures at Charles Darwin University. She was a winner of last year’s Northern Territory Literary Awards and peer-reviews for Humanities journal. She has published literary scholarship as well as poetry and short stories in two anthologies. Adelle is an active committee member of Australasian Universities Languages and Literature (AULLA).
Secretary and Public Officer: Michelle Coleman (Darwin)
Michelle Coleman is a Darwin PR consultant who specialises in media advice and quality writing and research. She holds a Bachelor of Journalism, was awarded the UQ Daily Miracle Bursary and has worked as a journalist and Chief of Staff for Channel 9 and the ABC. Michelle has been a board member since 2015.
Regional Representative: Toni Tapp Coutts (Katherine)
Toni Tapp Coutts is the Deputy Mayor of Katherine Town Council and a published author. She has been a member of NTWC for many years and is a former board member. Toni has been a member of the Katherine Region of Writers (KROW) for over 20 years and has extensive experience in governance, boards and committees. Her two memoirs A Sunburnt Childhood, and My Outback Life, were published by Hachette in 2016 and 2017 respectively.
Nicola Pitt (Alice Springs)
Nicola Pitt worked in Sydney’s book industry for six years at the publishing houses of Pan Macmillan, Random House and Hachette. As a book publicist she organised publicity campaigns for both international and Australian writers, encompassing many writers festivals around the country. She has a keen interest in the arts in general, and three years ago moved to Alice Springs to work at the CAAMA Music record label.
Fred van’t Sand (Darwin)
Fred van’t Sand is a performance poet with a long affiliation with the NT Writers’ Centre.
Christian Bok (Darwin)
Christian Bok is an experimental poet, originally from Canada, and a lecturer for Literary Studies at the School of Arts and Humanities at Charles Darwin University.
David Ketley (Darwin)
David Ketley is a novellist and poet who lives in Darwin.
Carolyn Mison-Smith (Darwin)
Carolyn Mison-Smith is a lecturer at School of Academic Language and Learning at Charles Darwin University.
