The Art of Seeing with Anthony Lawrence
Writing poetry doesn’t happen in isolation from our engagement with the world around us. The trick (or spell, for poetry can work like a form of magic) is being attentive to the possibility that at any moment something just might emerge from what we’ve always seen as being commonplace, and arrest our inner attention.
We can train ourselves to be mindful and vigilant. We can practise deep observation.
Join acclaimed Australian poet Anthony Lawrence for The Art of Seeing masterclass, designed to help writers tap into the marvelous, that often runs below and through what appears to be ordinary or commonplace.
This workshop will help you turn what you see into images that are at once original and captivating. It is hoped you will find, through the poems on offer and the exercises we bring to the table, indelible alternatives to what we know of the world.
Anthony Lawrence has published sixteen books of poems. His books and individual poems have won many awards, including the Philip Hodgins Memorial Medal; The Kenneth Slessor Poetry Prize (NSW Premier’s Award for Poetry); Josephine Ulrick Poetry Prize; Newcastle Poetry Prize; the Blake Poetry Prize; Judith Wright Calanthe Award; Gwen Harwood Memorial Award.
